The graphic novel I’m drawing is to lighten different perspectives on the life of refugees. Within several themes, I gave multiple workshops to teens at the Asylum Seekers’ Centre in the spring of 2022 to integrate their work into the novel. It’s called Verre Oorden, Lange Vluchten, and is about the contrast between how they perceive the world from within and my observations during interesting encounters.

My book ‘Verre Oorden, Lange Vluchten’ has finally become a reality.
After months of hard work, I am proud to present it to you. It is a collection of illustrations, poetic texts, and personal works by teenagers who have followed my workshops in the Asylum Seekers’ Centre Drachten.
I regard the book as a form of visual journalism: a term I recently learned from someone valuable. By recording my observations, I hope to contribute to complex issues I take to heart. Also, I want to give something small in return, such as an ode to the residents of the AZC. During my artist-in-residence period, I bundled those moments.

The book is for sale for €20,00.
I want to thank Stichting de Vrolijkheid for this opportunity to get to know the teenagers of the AZC. In addition, it would not have been possible to realize this booklet without the organization Soroptimist International Nederland, Club Friesland Zuid.
